The Manhattan Mall, one of the few traditional indoor malls in New York City, is located at 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue. There are entrances to the 34th Street-Herald Square subway station and the 33rd Street PATH station on the second basement level.

While the mall is still a high-traffic shopping venue, the most recent anchor store, Stern's, closed in 2001. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles took over space on the 8th floor. Venture bought the building in 1999 for $135 million and sold it to Vornado Realty Trust in 2006 for $689 million.

The mall is located on the grounds of Gimbels flagship store, which closed in 1986. On April 18, 2007, JC Penney announced that it would open a 150,000 square foot store at the mall, its first in Manhattan. As a result, retailers and the food court on the second underground level have been closed to make way for their new store.
